My Story

A couple years ago I found myself struggling, burned out, disconnected, and generally unhappy.

My journey in medicine began even before I was born. My parents were immigrant Filipino nurses to the US and I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO where they were recruited right of nursing school to begin their new life and family in middle America away from the challenges they faced in the Philippines.

As they settled in most of my babysitters were their nursing classmates so the seeds of my future career were planted very early. Those seeds continued to grow and I found myself at the age of 17 starting medical school at the one of the few 6 year combined medical school/undergraduate programs in my hometown at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

From there I stayed in Kansas City for my residency in family medicine and completed that along with my MBA in Healthcare Leadership at Rockhurst University. After 27 years in Kansas City I completed my formal medical training with a Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Hawaii. Since then I’ve had experience as a Primary Care Physician, a Hospice medical director, and mostly as an Emergency Room physician where I’ve been full time for the past 10 years.

OUr Healthcare system is broken

My experience in Healthcare as a Physician

We have a Healthcare system that cares about Disease and Illness. It does very little to promote or "care" about Health or Wellness

My MBA in Healthcare Leadership

While in my MBA program I became more aware of the cost drivers in our system and how the system does not promote wellness but instead rewarded chronic illness and advanced procedures

Our current system relies on chronically sick and diseased people

Just look at your experience as a Healthcare consumer in the United States? Have you felt like your wellness has been promoted? Are you tired of being prescribed another pill or recommended another invasive procedure?

Our healthcare system has definite shortcomings and challenges as a whole and I've seen both sides as a consumer and a provider.

For acute illness and trauma the system has its merits

After facing these challenges in the office as a Primary Care Physician I moved full time to the Emergency Room to focus on what our system does well.

Circling Back to my purpose

I'm now offering coaching to help put the care back in Healthcare and connect and help people reach their Health and Wellness goals as a Human Potential Coach

Finding balance through burnout

My Journey

Through the rigors of medical training I found myself developing many unhealthy habits that after years left me unbalanced.

As a teenager I began medical school with an incredible amount of zeal and energy. I endured many sleepless nights studying, dedicated my formative "best" years as a young adult, passed on countless opportunities, faced immense strain on my personal relationships, found myself with medical school sized loans and overall disregarded my own personal health in the service of providing and learning about what would be best for the patients I would treat. I've battled through periods of anxiousness/depression, been an emotional eater to the point of being 50lbs heavier and have had periods of disconnection with the ones I love and care about.

This continued in my career until I reached a point to seek out my own Health and Wellness. This journey has brought me to the current day as the habits I now share in my coaching made a dramatic transformation in my own life and my goal now is to share this with those that may have found themselves in a similar position.

Coaching is reuniting me with my purpose to help people without the limitations and challenges within our Healthcare system.
